How did you get the inspiration for the story?
I grew up in Brittany, Western France, in a village by the sea. As in other seaside towns, the CRS, the local riot police, double up as lifeguards. That has always tickled me. I wanted to write a story about a lifeguard who is also a policeman… so my hero, Rob Regor, was born. He’s a shape shifting merman and also a cop.
What are the themes in the story?
Love, obviously, and magic (it is a paranormal romance after all!) Family, and the clash between family obligations/expectations, and the hero and heroine’s own desires and needs. Rob’s father hates humans. Charlie’s father is disappointed by his rebel daughter. Rob and Charlie have a lot of obstacles in their way to achieving their happily ever after. Nature and legends are also key themes. My books are inspired by the Celtic myths and landscapes of Brittany and Wales.
Is the book part of a series?
Music for a Merman is the second book in the Sea of Love series. Each book is a standalone story featuring a different couple. The first book, A Merman’s Choice, was published in January 2019. The third book, Mermaids Marry in Green, will be out later this year. I have also written a short story, The Holiday Mermaid, which is really the fourth story in the series. It will be published this fall in the anthology “Desire Me Again,” a collection of “second chance at love” stories by my publisher, Black Velvet Seductions (title to be confirmed).
Romance tropes: yikes or likes?
I love a good trope. My favourites are forbidden love, fated mates, first love, and hero/heroine in jeopardy. All feature in my book.
What are you working on now?
I am writing another short story for a BVS Cowboy Romance anthology that is planned for next year. It’s my first sci-fi story, and features a cowboy, a beautiful alien, and blue space unicorns!

Alice lives in London, UK, with her husband and son. By day she’s a compliance manager for a pharmaceutical company. By night she writes fantasy romance about shape shifting mermen, water monsters and time-travelling witches.
