This excerpt from Saving Suki is my first #WIPWednesday after a long hiatus to take care of my son’s health. I’m still spending each day with him, but now that he is out of the hospital and with his chemo appointments scheduled every other week, I’ve had some free time and writing has helped keep me sane. For those of you who have been praying for us, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. (As always, this website and all of Sierra’s work is for adults only. An abusive childhood and an accident in his teens left stallion-shifter, Malcolm Paterson, with a distrust for his father and a lot of holes in his memory. When his dad passes away, Malcolm returns to Horse Mountain to settle his old man’s affairs out of obligation, but finds the shifter community’s near hero worship of the late doctor disquieting. He’s further shaken to meet a curvy beauty at the funeral who makes his heart gallop and his primal instincts take over.
Suki Marks has been in love with handsome and noble Malcolm Patterson ever since he saved her from bullies who called her an abomination when she was ten. He was the first person to be straight with her about the reasons some people shunned her family and was quick to debunk those prejudices as the ignorant folktales and stupid superstitions they were. Even after Malcolm graduated high school and left town, she couldn’t forget him, but becoming Doctor Patterson’s live-in nurse in his last year of life was just a coincidence. She never expected to be named in the wealthy physician’s will.
Even from the after-life, Malcolm’s father continues to turn the knife. Though he’d assumed he’d be disinherited, Malcolm learns before his father kicked the bucket, the old man had set up an elaborate scheme to drive him crazy and taint the feelings he has for the woman who might just be his fated mate. To make matters worse, a dangerous shifter-purist movement is brewing among a small segment of the Horse Mountain Clan, and they’re determined to prevent Suki from passing on her genes to a new generation. Will Malcolm be able to work through his past in time to secure his and Suki’s future?
Saving Suki is book four in the Horse Mountain Shifters series.

Mal’s back hurt and his head spun. He kept remembering his skull smashing through glass and a strong smell of alcohol. He lifted his hand to touch his battered face, nearly knocking himself out with a hoof. His neck—there were hands around his throat. Fuck—that hateful old bastard is strangling me to death. He coughed or tried too but couldn’t breathe. Ow, my chest. Someone’s leaning on my chest with so much weight.
Awakening on a gasp, Mal tried to sit up but Doctor Jenkins placed a hand on his shoulder. “You’re okay, boy. We’ve got you.” Mal glanced around the room, struggling to get his bearings. Old barrel racing trophies held down some papers on the shelf above his lightly stained oak wood desk. Dark blue curtains and a coordinating blue and green plaid comforter brought color to his drab gray walls. He was at home. The old man wasn’t there, not that he’d expect him to be, but where was Mama Carol? “Where’s my mama? Um…I mean the housekeeper.”
A sweet scent wafted over his face and he jerked his head to the side, noticing the woman seated just about a foot away from his shoulder. He smiled as he recognized her almond-shaped eyes and the little beauty mark just to the right of the inky-black colored, arched brow on the left side of her face. “Hey, Suzy Q.” He reached out his hand and she took it, her pretty Asian-American features lighting up with her smile.
“You remembered me?” She bit down on her bottom lip.
“My head’s a mess, but of course, I do. Did I just give you a ride home the other day?” His gaze fluttered over her and he squinted, looking away. “Wait, no that’s wrong—you were just a kid that day. He furrowed his brow and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I really knocked that liquor cabinet to pieces; huh?” He chuckled, glancing back at Doctor Jenkins. “I imagine the old man is still in the study on all fours, lapping up all the booze that spilled out of the broken bottles.”
The doctor exchanged looks with Suzy before holding up four fingers. “How many fingers am I holding up?”
So that’s all for today. I hope these paragraphs whet your appetite for more. There’s a lot going on in Saving Suki, and I truly believe each Horse Mountain book has gotten a little better with each new edition to the series.
